NCRB 2024 data shows a troubling shift in India’s suicide landscape, with daily wage earners forming the biggest share of victims at 31 percent—its highest in a decade. More than 52,000 such workers died by suicide. Family issues and illness remain key drivers, while Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra report the highest numbers, largely from low-income households.
NCRB data shows Bengaluru reported 878 dowry-related incidents in 2024, making up 87% of metro cases. Delhi, meanwhile, remains the worst hit for dowry deaths for the fifth straight year, with 109 cases recorded. The figures point to a troubling mismatch between where cases surface most and where deaths remain highest.

Suicide deaths in India’s farm sector declined slightly in 2024 for the second straight year, with NCRB data recording 10,546 cases. Maharashtra reported the highest number of farmer suicides, followed by Karnataka, while several states recorded none. Crop insurance and income support schemes are cited as possible contributors to the reduction.
NCRB data shows Delhi recorded a 15.1% drop in overall registered crimes in 2024, bringing cases to about 2.8 lakh. But the decline does not extend to violence and child-related offences. Delhi remains the highest among major metros for crimes against children, especially child abduction cases.
NCRB data for 2024 points to a worrying shift: cases involving juveniles in conflict with the law rose 11.2% to 34,878. At the same time, crimes against senior citizens increased. While kidnapping and abduction cases declined 15.4% to 96,079, overall patterns suggest more youth-linked offenses and heightened targeting of the elderly.
India recorded a 6 percent decline in crimes in 2024, with over 58 lakh cases reported compared to about 62 lakh in 2023. The crime rate per lakh population also fell. NCRB data shows a sharp drop in offences categorised as “Hurt”, a marginal reduction in murder cases, and dips in crimes against women as well as Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
